World-Class Costa Rica Fishing Trips

World-Class Costa Rica Fishing Trips Flamingo Beach Resort is the major sport-fishing center in the northern coastal area of Costa Rica. Experience the thrill and challenge of landing a world-record catch on one of the exciting Costa Rica fishing charters departing daily from our oceanfront resort. Sport-fishing vessels often travel 20 miles or more off shore to find game fish. But hooking a fish is only the beginning - the real sport lies in the fight that follows. Boats also charter out of nearby Coco's Beach, Tamarindo, Ocotal, Portero, and Brasilito, as well as other nearby towns. Fishing charters can be arranged prior to your arrival by contacting the resort tour desk directly.

The Types Of Fish You Can Catch

The Types Of Fish You Can Catch Sailfish
Although they're caught throughout the year, May through August is the high season. The sailfish population begins to thin out in September, with the slowest months being October and November.

Marlin
Marlin are caught year-round, with mid-November to early March being the best months. The numbers turn down slightly from April through early June, then pick up again, gaining steam in August and September.

Tuna
The prime months for catching tuna are August through October. Yellowfin and big eye tuna are often located well inside the Santa Catalina Islands - just 30 minutes or less from the beach - while schools of 12- to 200- pounders are usually more abundant outside. Concentrations of 40- to 60 -pound tuna are frequently caught, and a fair number of 200- to 400-pounders brought in every year.

Dorado
More commonly known as dolphin, these colorful gamesters are more abundant from late May through October. At this time, seasonal rains flood the rivers and carry out debris, which form trash lines close inshore. Dorado like to lie beneath these. And if you troll past a floating log, you're likely to hook one.

Wahoo
The first signs of wahoo begin when the rains start in May, peaking in July and August. Most are caught around rocky points and islands, but you can occasionally pick one up fishing offshore.

Roosterfish
Although they are available year round, more roosterfish are caught in the Papagayo Bay area from November through March. This is because many of the local boats are inshore during these windy months. "Roosters" like the structure of the shoreline and islands, where they're found in 50 to 60 feet of water.
